COABE has selected Rutgers University as the new editor for the Journal of Research and Practice for Adult Literacy, Secondary, and Basic Education. COABE Journal Editorial services began on January 1, 2015, led by Alisa Belzer, Amy D. Rose, and Dr. Heather Brown.
Ms. Amy D. Rose is a professor emeritus of adult education at Northern Illinois University where she taught for over twenty-five years. She has written and presented on issues related to policy, literacy, and adults in higher education. She focuses primarily on historical and qualitative research. In addition she has served as a president of the American Association of Adult and Continuing Education; a co-editor of the Adult Education Quarterly; and a co-editor of the Handbook of Adult Continuing Education: 2010 Edition.
Dr. Heather Brown is the Executive Director of the Women + Girls Research Alliance at University of North Carolina-Charlotte. Her research focuses on the intersections between weight and learning in women as well as on the ethics and practice of research with stigmatized populations. Her professional experiences encompass significant work with writing, editing, and publishing. While the majority of her career has been as a grant writer/editor, during which she facilitated more than $20 million in awards, she began her career as a journalist for community weekly newspapers in northern Wisconsin. She also has two years of experience as the Editorial Assistant for Adult Education Quarterly, where she currently serves on the editorial review board, and provides peer review for proposals to adult education conferences and for manuscripts to the Journal of Diversity in Higher Education. Most recently, Heather headed the Grant Writing and Publications unit in the Office of Research at the University of Missouri-Columbia, where she oversaw the publication of the award-winning Illumination magazine.
Alisa Belzer, Ph.D., holds bachelor's and doctoral degrees from the University of Pennsylvania. She teaches courses on adult learning and literacy in the Department of Learning and Teaching at Rutgers University–New Brunswick.
