This session will highlight the role that professional development plays in changing the culture in adult education towards a more student-centered approach. During this session, attendees will be presented with information and data from one community college campus that will communicate how the adoption of AVID for Higher Education as a systematic approach to teaching and learning was implemented as a research-based support needed for course/program redesign in order to foster high-engagement learning environments among students and faculty. Participants will learn from a faculty development coordinator about how high-engagement strategies in professional development have transformed not only departmental meetings but also adult education classrooms at Howard College (HC). Examples of training and meetings employed by Howard College (HC) in order to give adult education instructors and students a model for shifting paradigms and creating environments that will help foster skills needed for college and career readiness (i.e. writing to learn, inquiry, collaboration, organization, and reading to learn) will be shared.
