FOR ADULT EDUCATION

A Critical Time is Upon Us!
While we recently secured a major victory—the release of FFY25 funds to states to run adult education programs in FY26—we cannot afford to slow down. The President’s FFY26 “Skinny Budget” proposal calls for deep cuts to non-defense discretionary spending, including the complete elimination of federal funding for adult education. Though it’s unlikely to pass the Senate as written, it sends a clear and troubling message: the future of adult education is on the line.
More than 75% of COABE’s local programs rely on this funding to help adults improve their literacy, earn credentials, and change the trajectory of their lives. These programs are essential to millions of learners working to support their families, strengthen their communities, and build a better future.
With congressional appropriations committee meetings coming up in July to determine FFY26 funding levels—which will directly affect our programs in FY27—it’s more important than ever to make our voices heard. This is a critical window to contact your lawmakers, share why adult education matters in your community, and urge them to protect and invest in these life-changing services.
This is our call to action. Together, we can make a difference.
